After the Meiji Restoration, the Japanese government, which actively pursued the policy of “leaving Asia and entering Europe,’’ regarded Taiwan as a site for architectural experimentation and as a showcase of colonial power.
Towering and monumental, these structures were typically built at the heart of major cities, serving both to accentuate colonial authority and to facilitate administration. Today, many of them have been repurposed, either as offices for the Republic of China government or as cultural spaces open to the public.
These red-and-white brick buildings were part of artist’s everyday scenery, always in sight during her daily commute.
Red and white towering geometric forms, scattered across the corners of my daily life and memory, are being shone upon by the blazing white sun suspended in the vivid blue sky. To artist, they loomed like a giant vision of the national flag — the Blue Sky, White Sun, and a Wholly Red Earth —constantly fluttering before her eyes.
Through the motion of pages turning automatically under sunlight and the logic of color separation in printing, this book presents the artist’s process of associating the red-and-white buildings and the blue sky with the flag of the Republic of China – Taiwan’s government.
