“Island Daily” is a diary book by artist Wu Yen-Cheng, documenting nearly seven months of residency and life on Kinmen in 2016. Through the artist’s perspective, the book captures and records the stories and rhythms of life on this island.
Kinmen, a small island shaped by war, feels like a mute body — a “flesh island” unable to voice its own narrative. Painted with layers of camouflage, scarred by artillery fire, the island eventually moved beyond its violent past. After the noise subsided, this borderland began to dream, to speak, and to transform into a living island free from its imposed labels.
The book is divided into chapters: “Island Landscapes,” “Places,” “Bird Days,” “That Day,” and “Residency Daily Life.” In addition to diary entries, it interweaves photography, watercolor sketches of local wildlife, and paintings, presenting a poetic visual and textual exploration of the island’s evolving identity.
