Wearing a helmet and protective gear, I gathered my courage and stood with everyone in front of the line facing the artillery tower. At the moment the bee cannon fireworks were set off, all I could see was smoke and exploding flashes of fire. While experiencing slight difficulty in breathing and the pain from being struck by the fireworks, I pressed the shutter, hoping that within the flickering bursts of light and explosions, I might glimpse—just faintly—the other world we hope to connect with.
The Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival in Taiwan is famous worldwide for its intense “beehive rockets” and has a history of about 140 years. The origin of the Yanshui beehive fireworks dates back roughly 140 years, when a large-scale epidemic broke out in the Yanshui area. At that time, people sought guidance from Lord Guan (Guandi). General Zhou Cang was appointed as the vanguard, with the palanquin of Lord Guan following behind, and they paraded through the town while setting off firecrackers, which eventually helped to stop the epidemic. Since then, the Yanshui town has held the Beehive Fireworks Festival every year during the Lantern Festival (the 14th and 15th days of the first lunar month).
STING is a renewed version of the book originally published by TCP Press under the title Shining Night Walk. It has been re-edited by breaking up and reorganizing the images according to a logic that emphasizes reading rhythm. The layout places greater focus on the rhythm of reading and the intensity of visual stimulation, creating a different and interesting experience compared to the previous work.
