From the time we leave home as young adults to start life in another city, there is a span of about ten years during which many people have the most opportunities to live with others who are not related by blood. From spring tulips at a supermarket in Hamburg to mysterious bulbs brought to a secondhand shop in Iceland, being able to bring a plant back somewhere, unwrap its kraft paper or plastic packaging, pot or bottle it, and water it—that’s when it feels like you’ve settled in.
